If immediate medical attention is needed, proceed directly to the nearest animal medical facility.

Even though we want to help a sick or injured pet, it's very important to keep in mind that the animal is usually in a frightened state. So, remember to protect yourself by wearing gloves or wrapping the animal in a blanket. A dog can be muzzled if necessary. Contact your vet immediately if the seriousness of the injury is beyond basic first aid.

Along with calling your 1-800-PET-CLINIC (1-800-738-2546) vet another great number to keep handy is the National Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. If you take your pet to the vet for suspected poisoning be sure to take the container or a sample if possible so that your pet can be properly diagnosed and treated. If your pet is unresponsive take them immediately to your local veterinarian's office or emergency veterinarian.

To avoid accidents and injuries be sure to keep dangerous objects such as needles, pins, fish hooks or any other potentially hazardous items out of reach of your pets. Prescription medications including vitamins can seriously harm your animals and even cause death. Poisons including household cleaners and some indoor plants are also important to keep away from pets. Remember animals are not unlike very young children and must be safe-guarded against hazards just as you would a child.
