Rabies

What is Rabies?

Rabies is a deadly disease contracted by mammals that have been bitten by animals that are already infected with the disease. Keeping your pets' vaccinations up-to-date is Schedule an Appointment with Your Local 1-800-PET-CLINIC Vet Today!extremely important in stopping the spread of rabies to your beloved pet.

Reducing the Threat

Wild animals should not be kept as pets because of the potential threat to both humans and other pets. You can also reduce the exposure to rabies by keeping your pets on your property and not allowing them to roam free. Also, do not leave food or garbage outside because it may attract wild or stray animals that could be infected with rabies.

If You or Your Pet Have Been Bitten

Don't panic! Wash the wound thoroughly and vigorously with soap and lots of water. If possible, capture the animal in a large box or an overturned trash can. If this is not a possibility at least try to identify the animal before it escapes. DO NOT try to pick the animal up. Call local animal control authorities to come and get the animal. If you must kill the animal keep in mind that the animal's brain will be needed to test for rabies.
